Basic Band
This
full-year course is designed for students playing a wind instrument who will develop the skills necessary to eventually be
placed in intermediate or advanced band. The emphasis is on development and remediation
of musical skills.
Intermediate Band
This
full-year course provides an opportunity for instrumentalists to reinforce and remediate their basic instruction and to gain
performing experience on a daily basis. In addition to skill development, emphasis
is placed on a high standard of musical excellence in the preparation and performance of band literature. All Intermediate Band students are required to participate in the Concert Band ensemble.
Advanced Band
In
this full-year course, emphasis will be placed on a high standard of musical excellence and performance of band literature. The band provides an opportunity for instrumentalists to continue their instruction
and to gain performing experience on a daily basis. In addition, students will
be exposed to solo and small ensemble music, with an emphasis on County Band
tryout pieces. All Advanced Band students are required to participate in the
Concert Band ensemble.
String Orchestra
The strings course meets all year long and provides an
opportunity for string students of all ability levels to develop their craft. In
addition to skill development, emphasis is placed on a high standard of musical excellence in the preparation and performance
of orchestral literature. All Orchestra members are required to perform in both the Winter and Spring concerts.
Music Theory/Adv. Piano
The Music Theory
and Advanced Piano courses are offered together as one class, with an emphasis on theory, music writing, and ear training
for all students. Non-piano students focus on music theory, while piano students also learn advanced piano technique
and repertoire. This course is an upper-level course designed for students who wish to continue their musical studies outside
of high school, i.e. music major/minor, music performance, etc. The course will prepare each student for their college
music audition and/or entrance exam. Prerequisite: Successful completion of at least one music course.
Percussion Class
This
is a full-year course for all high school students that play or aspire to play percussion instruments. The class is designed to accommodate all levels of playing ability at once, including those students who
have not learned how to play percussion instruments before. Students will be
taught to play both pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments, and will be exposed to percussion ensemble literature. Percussion class students are required to be in the Percussion Ensemble.
*Membership in all instrumental
classes is subject to the approval of the Band Director.
